Portage Lift Bridge Mechanical & Structural Renovations | Houghton, Michigan

As the only means into the Keweenaw Peninsula, traffic considerations were extremely important to this project. Shift work was required in addition to bearing the chilling Keweenaw conditions for two consecutive winters. This project consisted of new walkways at water level along the bridge abutment protective barriers. The main lift chain shackle pins were removed and replaced on night shift work to avoid traffic hazards. A new control / operators office was installed in place of the existing after the close of the shipping season. In addition, the hydraulic pumps for the bridge lift were upgraded for a longer service life.
