Understanding Steel Framing in Construction

Steel framing, a construction mainstay for decades, is known for its exceptional durability, sustainability, and cost-effectiveness. When choosing a steel framing system, factors such as width, height, location, roof type, and intended use should be considered. Let’s explore the cost-effective options available in steel framing construction.

Framing Techniques

Welded Steel: In this approach, the steel framing is fabricated off-site and then delivered to the construction site, where it is welded into the final structure.

Bolted Steel: This framing method involves fabricating steel components off-site, which are bolted together on-site to form the structure.

Light Gauge: This framing consists of thin sheets of steel that are bent into C- or Z-shaped sections used for residential and smaller buildings.

Structural Systems

Load Bearing Wall: In this system, the wall bearing the load needs to be strong enough to carry vertical and horizontal loads. The support of the roof load is carried by the interior or exterior walls. Often, steel lintels are used over doors and windows.

Long Span: When extra clearance is required, this option, featuring long-span steel framing, is a perfect solution.

Skeleton: This steel framing option offers the flexibility to construct the area of the floor and roof beyond standard sizes.

Steel framing offers numerous advantages beyond durability, including resistance to pests, fire, and moisture. It is highly sustainable because it is 100% recyclable. Due to its strength-to-weight ratio, it can provide for design flexibility and longer spans with straight, true walls. Additionally, structural steel framing systems offer faster construction, reduced waste, and a long-term, cost-effective, and environmentally friendly building solution.
