Gundlach Champion has worked with several manufacturing clients throughout the Northern Great Lakes Region. Over the decades, we have learned many of the factors that contribute to a successful construction project. Here are a few:
Production Team Participation
Many industrial construction projects involve moving or installing new equipment. When you include the production department early in the planning process, you avoid costly errors and rework. Talking to the supervisors and workers using the equipment can increase efficiency and productivity while assuring the project meets the established requirements.
Delivery System Selection
Once the design is completed, you must decide which construction delivery system will work best for the project. Your contractor can help you through the process of choosing whether the system should be GC (General Contractor), CM (Construction Management), or Design-Build. Each has pros and cons that you will need to review to choose the best fit for your project.
Establish the Schedule
Regardless of the delivery system, the construction schedule is essential to the success of the project. By setting the schedule, you can consider variables that can affect the schedule you can’t control. Simply put, the better the pre-planning, the better your project stays on schedule.
Expedite Purchasing Equipment
If you plan to incorporate new equipment in the project, waiting to purchase it can cause problems. Overhead cranes, drainage pits, clean rooms, specialized equipment, or expanded material handling are just some of the considerations that you should plan for and have available during construction to avoid issues.
Future Expansion
The last thing you want to think about during a construction project may be a future build. However, planning for scalability will make expansion easier as your company grows and needs more production and office space.
