Women in Construction Event

On Friday April 13, Kellie Klossner (GCI Project Coordinator) and Liza LaJoice (GCI Operations Manager) had the opportunity to attend the Women in Construction Day at Northern Michigan University (NMU).

The event is hosted by the Construction Management Project at NMU and its aim is provide young women from grades 7 to 12 the opportunity to experience different aspects of the construction industry as well as ask questions of industry members.  Each student had the chance to participate in a CAD lab, build a wooden toolbox in the carpentry lab, use a plasma cutter to create a jewelry tree, and participate in a leadership challenge.  Kellie and Liza participated in the leadership challenge, discussing their background, what their jobs entail, and the experiences that led to them working in the construction industry.

The event was well attended by over 110 girls from schools all over the Upper Peninsula – Kingsford, Superior Central, North Dickinson, Ishpeming, Marquette, Au Train, Munising, and Gwinn to name a few.

Kellie and Liza look forward to the opportunity to participate in next year’s event!
