GCI has been focused on the safety of our job sites since we were founded in 1898. We are continuing that tradition by participating National Safety Stand-Down Day on May 7, 2018. The focus for this year is a leading cause of death for construction employees, fall-related incidents. Of the 991 construction fatalities in 2016, 370 fatalities were caused by falls from elevation (BLS data). Those deaths were preventable. The National Safety Stand-Down raises fall hazard awareness across the country in an effort to stop fall fatalities and injuries.
Any business that wants to prevent hazards in the workplace can participate in the Stand-Down. It is a voluntary event for employers to talk directly to employees about fall hazards, protective methods, and the company’s safety policies and goals. It also presents employees an opportunity to have a discussion with management about fall safety procedures. Our participation in National Safety Stand-Down Day is one more way GCI remains committed to the safety of the crews and visitors at our projects.
